NCIS” fans are morosely counting down the days before Agent Anthony DiNozzo’s character, played by Michael Weatherly, leaves the highly popular series.

However, loyal followers are set to welcome a new member of the team, as “24” favourite Sarah Clarke has signed up to appear in at least two episodes to join the “NCIS” cast. Reports are also circulating that she may be tapped to become a series regular, possibly to fill the void that Weatherly will be leaving.

Clarke will play the role of Tess Monroe, a “quick-witted, tough and shrewd” special agent who recently moved from New York City, TV Guide reports. Monroe’s character is described as someone sexy and strong. She seems to have no luck in love so far, having been divorced several times. Because she doesn’t have kids, Monroe treats her fellow agents as her family. While she looks tough outside, she has a big heart and a strong advocate of honor, justice and doing what's right. She’s bent to protect these values that she holds dear with her team, and “NCIS” fans can expect to see a determined, albeit sarcastic woman to inject further dynamics with the other characters.

"We feel so fortunate to have Sarah Clarke joining us to play Tess," the show's executive producer Gary Glasberg said, according to TV Guide. “I've been a fan of hers going back to 24 and more recently 'Bosch.' She's a gifted actress, a total pro, and we can't wait to introduce her to our 'NCIS' family and have some fun.”

In addition to “24,” Clarke is known for her roles on “Bosch,” “The Tomorrow People,” “Covert Affairs,” “Men of a Certain Age” and the “Twilight” movies.

While fans are still weighing in on the appearance of a new character, they are also eagerly anticipating the return of Ziva David (Cote de Pablo), who is reported to appear on DiNozzo’s final episodes. CBS has not given any official confirmation about this development, but Glasberg teases about the big surprises for the “NCIS” fans. “People can absolutely plan on lots of surprises and lots of emotion, and lots of twists and turns, ultimately leading us toward Tony's departure," he tells TV Guide. "I promise you that everything you're fishing for will be delivered in some form." The finale will be aired on May 17.
