Apple's iPhone 6 may have been this year's most anticipated device, but there is one particular smartphone that comes to mind when design, power and productivity are to be considered. The Moto X 2014 has clearly been Motorola's flagship battling against the strong performers in the market.

The Moto X 2014 has been updated to Android Lollipop on a few carriers and is packed with new specs to deserve its own Moto X+1 or Moto X2 title. For consumers and analysts, there are more reasons why Motorola's flagship device can be considered as one of 2014's best smartphones.

Moto Apps

The Moto Assist app serves like a personal assistant, which can read text messages aloud while its user is driving. The app automatically puts the phone on silent mode when the user is busy and can also alert its user with the pre-set schedules for the day provided the calendar is up-to-date and concise.

Based on Android Central's review, another Moto app is the Moto Alert, which can update your family and friends with your current location when turned on. The app automatically sends text messages of the user's travel and will sound an alarm or auto-dial an emergency number if the user is in danger. Other interesting apps include the Moto Voice and Moto Migrate.

Price

Moto X's price is considered as one of the major reasons why the device has enticed many consumers. It is dubbed as one of the cheapest flagships in the market with its US$499 off-contract cost for its 16GB version.

The Moto X is even cheaper than the Nexus 6 at US$680, Apple's iPhone 6 at US$649, Samsung's Galaxy Note 4 which costs US$749 and the Galaxy S5 at US$599 and HTC's One M8 which sells at US$649. Motorola is currently offering a US$50 off on any purchase over US$350 on or before Dec. 23 which means consumers could avail of the Moto X for a much cheaper price.

Android and Its Updates

The Android 5.0 Lollipop update came to Moto X weeks after it was officially released in November. Having the latest platform would definitely increase the usefulness and performance of the Moto X.

Active Display

Moto X's active display can present basic notifications even when the screen is in sleep mode. There is no need to wake the display up as these notifications can only be displayed when the device detects a hand movement on top of it. The ability to detect hand movements can also be used to cancel phone calls and stop alarms.

Customisation

Finally, Motorola offers customization via the Moto Maker website where in consumers can find an exciting number of customization options. The options include different colours and fabrics like leather and wood. According to Digital Trends, Moto X 2014 beats the iPhone 6 in this category given the endless options to personalise Motorola's flagship.
