Is it time for marriage equality? Majority of Australians seems to think so, according to an Essential poll.

Citing the poll, the Greens used the latest poll to take a swipe on leaders of the Coalition and the Opposition in Australia's parliament.

"Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott are looking increasingly ridiculous and isolated as they remain stubbornly out-of-touch with their views on marriage equality," the Greens' LGBTI spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

Hanson-Young claimed that Aussies "need to vote Green" in September if they want to see marriage equality as it is "the only party representing their view on the issue."

"Australian politicians work for the Australian people, not factional bully boys or vested interest groups, but it's clear the leaders of the old parties have forgotten that when it comes to marriage equality.

The senator said the Parliament needs to support the Greens Bill which, if it passes into law, will recognise international same-sex marriages in Australia.

"The Greens care for all Australians regardless of their sexuality but, as more and more countries choose to be on the right side of history, the opponents of equality are making sure we are left behind.

"Tony Abbott needs to grant Coalition members a conscience vote on this issue so that Australia can join New Zealand, the UK, Canada and many other countries."
