It may not be Friday the 13th, but horror icon Jason Voorhees is cutting a path through “Mortal Kombat X” nonetheless. NetherRealm has finally revealed the first ever gameplay footage, showing the masked murderer terrorising both the denizens of Outworld and the soldiers of Earthrealm.

The new trailer, hosted on the official Mortal Kombat Kommunity YouTube channel, lasts less than a minute, but it’s enough to whet the appetites of horror fans and fighting game aficionados alike. Wielding his familiar machete, Jason walks ominously onto the stage, dragging the remains of an unfortunate victim before brutally dispatching his opponents. In the video, Jason hacks, slices and rips his victims apart in an appropriately gory manner.

Speaking to PlayStation Lifestyle, NetherRealm Senior Producer Adam Urbano explained how the team comes up with the intense Fatalities seen in the game. “Whether it is a picture, or a poem, you name it, they all sort of get filtered through the team, Ed looks at all of them and there’s a discussion. This one is incredible, this one crosses a line, this one is too funny and somehow with a sprinkle of magic the ultimate ones get picked,” he said.

Jason is only one of four characters included in the Kombat Pack, which also includes “Mortal Kombat” fan-favourites Tanya and Tremor, as well as fellow horror icon, The Predator. Current owners of the Kombat Pack will gain early access to Jason starting May 5, and the character will be available as a separate purchase for $5, starting on May 12.

Since its release on April 14, “Mortal Kombat X” has enjoyed immense success, both critically and commercially. Series co-creator and NertherRealm Creative Director Ed Boon announced on Twitter that the launch of “MKX” represented the biggest launch in franchise history. Gamespot rated the game an 8 out of 10 in its review, stating that it had the best fighting mechanics in the series, interesting character designs and an engaging story.

“Mortal Kombat X” launched on April 14 on Xbox One, PC and PS4. The game’s release on PS3 and Xbox 360 was pushed to summer.
