In-vitro Fertilization
A recent report reveals that the number of IVF births in the US per year is on the growing side. In Picture: Human genetic material is stored at a laboratory in Munich May 23, 2011. On May 25, 2011 the ethic commission of the German lower house of parliament (Bundestag) will discuss about alternative proposals for a new law on the use of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (Praeimplantationsdiagnostik) is a technique used to identify genetic defects in embryos created through in vitro fertilization (IVF) before pregnancy, which is banned by German legislation. A recent report by the researchers at the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology in the US revealed that more number of babies are now being conceived with the help of assisted reproductive technology such as In-Vitro Fertilisation(IVF).

According to the research, almost 1.5 percent of the babies in the US were conceived in 2003 with the help of IVF. The statistical figures shared by the researchers show that 2013 observes a fewer number of twins, triplets and babies of the higher order who were born out of an IVF treatment. The study also revealed that women in the US are opting for a single-embryo transfer rather than twins and triplets, hence cutting down the rate of multiple embryo implantation.

The statistical data has confirmed the birth of 63,286 babies who were tried to be conceived in 174, 962 assisted reproductive treatment cycles. The data represent an increase in the success of assisted reproductive technology, with 2,000 more babies who were conceived as compared to 2002.

According to the report, out of 62,286, a large majority of babies were born with the help of IVF. The researchers have revealed that only 1 percent of the cases had the baby conceived with the help of other invasive and risky assisted reproductive technologies like zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT) and gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT).

The research has also claimed that the birth rate success for IVF also depends on the age of the mother opting for the treatment. The trends show that mother in the age group of 35 to 37 years, birth rate is 31 percent, followed by the mothers from the age group of 38-40 years with 21 percent success rate of birth through IVF. The least success rate is shown by the mothers from the age group of 40 and above, with the birth rate dwindling between 5 and 11 percent.
