The New York Yankees completed their first sweep of the Boston Red Sox in almost a decade at the Fenway Park, beating the home team 8-5 in the final game of a three game series. It was the first time since 2006 that the Yankees swept the Red Sox away from home. They have also won the last four series at Fenway Park.

Boston got off to a poor start and they paid for it dearly. Playing in front of a crowd of just over 33,000, they leaked runs from the beginning as starter Joe Kelly gave up five runs in less than five innings. Mark Texiera homered in the very first inning with Brett Gardner already on base to give New York a 2-0 lead.

Having conceded that homer off a slider, Kelly used more of his fastball and although considered one of the best in the league, it was not good enough to trouble the Yankees. Jacoby Ellsbury, Alex Rodriguez and Brian McCann all scored singles to hand the Yankees a 5-0 lead halfway through the game. Things got worse for the Red Sox in the sixth inning. With Gregorius and Ellsbury on base, Gardner homered to extend New York’s lead to 8-0.

Boston’s revival started in the sixth when Dustin Pedroia scored after a David Ortiz double. Hanley Ramirez was then struck by a pitch from Adam Warren. Sandoval singled this time as Ortiz scored, and then, with Ramirez and Sandoval on base, Mike Napoli homered it 8-5. Ellsbury was then hit by Mujica in the eighth and both teams were warned by umpires. The Yankees then held off the Red Sox to secure their first sweep at Fenway for over nine years.

Manager John Farrell was still upbeat about the Red Sox despite their loss. “I thought we showed tremendous fight, tremendous comeback. We scored five in the bottom of the [sixth] inning after we were down 8-0. Right down to the final swing of the night,” Farrell said. “There’s still a strong competitive spirit in that room,” he said to the Boston Globe after the game.
