Miss Universe 2013: Maria Jesus Matthei, Niece of Presidential Candidate, to Represent Chile

The ultimate beauty contest, Miss Universe, is less than a month away and there are a few countries left who will disclose the representatives for the pageant. On Sunday, Oct. 06 Miss Chile Universe 2013 was announced and she is none other than Maria Jesus Matthei.

After weeks of hard work and preparation, Maria Jesus Matthei was chosen in the Ritz Hotel, Las Condes as the contestant who will represent Chile in the upcoming Miss Universe 2013 scheduled for Nov. 9 in Moscow.

The event started out at 8:40 p.m. and was encouraged by Savka Pollak. 15 candidates worked hard to please the jury members consisting of Antonio Vodanovic, Luciano Marrocchino, Nicolas Massu, Jose Alfredo Fuentes, Gianella Marengo and Thiago, and others.

The candidates were marked based on their dance performance and the presentation of promotional videos. 21-year-old Maria Jesus Matthei scored the highest points and was declared as the winner of Miss Chile Universe 2013 contest.

Maria belongs to Tarapaca region of Chile. "I decided to enter this contest because I've traveled a lot, I'm a cosmopolitan girl and I love beauty contests," she said.

Apart from being Miss Chile, Maria is also the niece of Evelyn Matthei who is a promising presidential candidate. She is up against Michelle Bachelet in Chile's first presidential race to only have female candidates. The elections in Chile are scheduled for Nov. 17 which is eight days after the Miss Universe 2013 contest.

After the winning the Miss Chile Universe 2013 contest, she said, "It was my dream to win and I did it. I'll arrive in Russia perfectly prepared."
