Richard Linklater continues the "fated" story of Jesse and Celine with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy 9 years after Before Sunset, 18 years after Before Sunrise. They were in Vienna; then they reunited Paris. Guess where in the world they are now?

In Before Sunrise (1995), Jesse and Celine talked about "nature's way of letting people grow old together without killing each other." Their conversation was sparked by a German couple having a bad fight in the same coach they were in. If this couple's fight didn't annoy Celine so much, she wouldn't have transferred to another seat, which happens to be just across Jesse's. Fate, eh? From this point on, they've been thrown in decades of a romantic journey that will eventually make a 360 turn.

In Before Sunset (2004), they reunite in Paris and rekindle the romance that went ablaze 9 years ago. In Before Midnight, they find themselves in Greece. They have become the grown-up couple having some huge fights - but still staying together.

"You owe this is a favour - to both you and your future husband," Jesse tells Celine to convince her to get off the train with him in Vienna. At this point, they haven't asked each other's names. Jesse eventually married, but his marriage was dying even before he saw Celine again in Paris. They don't even laugh together anymore, he tells Celine in Paris.

In Before Midnight, they become parents to twins. They are not married, but it seems just right for Jesse and Celine to have a family outside of conventions. Yet, they work on things that really matter. Like keeping their connection intact, keeping love alive, growing old together without killing each other, and putting an end to a fight before midnight.

"What's so wonderful about this movie is it's kind of 'genderless'. It's fun to make a romantic movie that I'm not ashamed to ask my male friends to go see," Ethan Hawke tells Manchester Evening News.

"Their relationship started with a choice that Jesse made - to follow his heart," Julie Delpy tells the same publication. "But that comes with consequences, and now we find them in a situation where they have to make another choice."

The romantics are polarised when it comes to "best scenes" and "favourite scenes" in Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. One of the common favourites, however, is the period scene in which Jesse tries to get a "picture" of Celine.

"Oh, wow," Jesse exclaims, as if he's seeing Celine for the first time, as if her beauty is striking him for the first time. "I'm going to take a picture. So I'll never forget you..." And then he just gazes through her eyes. Because it's 1995. Cellphones were huge blocks of gadgets that only the rich ones can afford.

Before Midnight Australian Release: Celine and Jesse Down Under?

Those who have enjoyed Celine's and Jesse's journey since 1995 are looking forward to seeing Before Midnight. (And maybe Before Twilight or Before Dusk in 2022?)

Before Midnight premiered at the Sundance Festival early this year. Hopscotch reports the movie will be in Australian cinemas on the week starting July 18.
