In what seems to be a Deja vu, 21-year-old Bobbi Kristina Brown – the only daughter of singer Whitney Houston - was found on Saturday by husband Nick Gordon unresponsive in a bathtub filled with water. It brings back similar memories of Houston, who was found dead almost three years ago on February 11, 2012 in the same condition.

She wasn’t breathing when Gordon discovered Brown at the bathroom of her unit in Roswell, Georgia. A friend called 911, and Gordon attempted to revive Brown through CPR. When medics arrived, they transported Brown to North Fulton Hospital where she is now alive and breathing but in a medically induced coma, reports CNN.

A medically induced coma involves the use of general anaesthesia or extreme hypothermia to stop blood flow completely to give the brain time to heal without the body performing medical triage by closing blood flow to damaged sections, according to Scientific American.

Anaesthesiologist Emery Brown of the Harvard Medical School, in an article at the New England Journal of Medicine, explains, “The idea is: Let me reduce the amount of energy those different brain areas need. If I can do that then, as the brain heals and the swelling goes down, maybe those areas that were at risk can be protected.”

Brown said keeping a patient on medically induced coma, which is reversible unlike a coma, depends on the person’s progress and nature of injury. Doctors usually use propofol – the same drug that Michael Jackson was addicted to – which Brown said is probably the most used drug for anaesthesia.

Lisa Holland, Atlanta Police spokeswoman, said there is no truth to rumours that Brown had drugs or alcohol, inevitably comparing the incident to what happened to her mum who was discovered lifeless in a bathtub a few hours before she was to attend a pre-Grammy party at Beverly Hilton hotel. Autopsy said Houston died of “atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use.”

The singer battled cocaine, marijuana and pills over the years prior to her accidental drowning in a bathtub with very hot water, reports Washington Post.

Brown is the only child of Houston and R&B singer Bobby Brown, who separated in 2007.
