TV Guide reports that on the March 16 episode, the top 14 contestants are delighted to see two famous and admirable mums: Michelle Obama and Julie Bowen. Michelle reveals that the mystery box challenge is inspired by the White House garden. Meanwhile, Julie joins the kids in a heartwarming challenge.

Fox offered sneak peeks of Thursday’s run, and in the video [watch below], the kids watch Michelle on the screen as she tells them about the mystery box. “One of my greatest fashions is to make sure that kids like you have the nutritious food that you need to grow up healthy,” she says.

Michelle asks them to prepare an original healthy dish, making sure that half of the plate is filled with fruits and veggies, while the rest are composed of whole grains, lean protein and dairy. Donovan, 9, doesn’t look to happy with the challenge. “Michelle Obama wants me to cook vegetables. Not happening,” he claims. “I don’t like vegetables. They’re evil.”

In another teaser [watch below], Gordon and Christina call Julie, who’ll be the guest judge for the elimination challenge. The 47-year-old actress asks the contestants to celebrate their own mums by cooking dishes in their honour. As the kids cook their hearts out, Julie and the judges go around the “MasterChef” kitchen to check on the preparation. Julie admits that she’s completely in awe of the young cooks’ level of sophistication.

"MasterChef Junior" Season 5 recap

On episode 5, the young cooks found out they’d be facing an intense team challenge – their first outdoor activity since the season started. They were divided into two teams, with Adam and Shayne tasked as team captains. Adam took the lead of the blue team with Afnan, Gonzalo, Evan, Donvan, Sydney, Charlie and Avani. Over on the red team, Shayne was joined by Mark, Mashu, Justise, Lila, Cydney, Peyton and Jasmine.

Both teams were tasked to prepare lunch for 51 first responders. With 75 minutes in the clock, the top 14 had to cook filet mignon, two sides of their choice and a sauce. After tasting both dishes, the diners voted to determine which team won the challenge. Despite hitting a snag over their raw steaks, the red team managed to redeem themselves and ended up winning with 58 percent of the total votes.

After heading back to the “MasterChef” kitchen, the judges announced that Adam, Gonzalo and Charlie were the bottom three. For bringing the worst performance of the day, Charlie and Gonzalo were eliminated. Find out what happens next on “MasterChef Junior” Season 5, which airs in the US every Thursday at 8 p.m. on Fox.
