The competition heats up on “MasterChef Junior” Season 5 as the top 16 contestants embark on their first outdoor team challenge. As the young chef hopefuls cook for American heroes, expectations are sky-high. Since their guests have a strong sense of urgency, the remaining contenders will find themselves working against the clock.

As if that’s not difficult enough, the budding culinary experts will be out of their comfort zones. Stress and tension will be twice as much, since the kids will be tasked to prepare a hearty dish outside the “MasterChef” kitchen.

TV Guide reports that on the March 9 episode, the top 16 competitors are tasked to cook a filet mignon lunch for a set of first responders, including firefighters and cops. Fox offered a sneak peek of Thursday’s run and in the video, the young cooks are seen sweating while grilling the beef and mashing potatoes.

The pressure is definitely on as firetrucks and police cars start to arrive and helicopters hover the contestants. One team will be in deep trouble when “MasterChef” judge Gordon Ramsay flies off the handle over a badly cooked steak. Gordon is also seen berating a group of contestants, whom he calls “disorganised.” It may be a good thing that Gordon, along with Christina Tosi and a guest judge, won’t determine the winning team. Instead, the diners will vote which dish they prefer and the group with the most nods will be saved from elimination.

"MasterChef Junior" Season 5 recap

On Episode 4, six young cooks competed in a team challenge to make as many perfect corn dogs as possible under 10 minutes. The Blue Team, composed of Evan Robinson and Justise Mayberry, was declared the winner after making 13 perfect corn dogs. For their prize, Gordon had to be covered in corn dog batter but true to “MasterChef Junior” spirit, Christina was also not spared from the mess.

Evan and Justise joined the other contestants safe at the gallery, while the others faced the dreaded elimination challenge. “The Big Bang Theory” star Mayim Bialik was introduced to the contenders as that particular episode’s guest judge. In the challenge, the remaining cooks were asked to put their spin on a vegan burger and a side dish -- since Mayim is vegan -- within 45 minutes.

At the end of the challenge, the vegan meals prepared by Adam Wadhwani and Shayne Wells stood out. Adam’s Falafel Style Mediterranean Vegan Burger and Shayne’s Southwest vegan burger with avocado fries and sriracha sauce impressed the judges and Mayim. However, young cooks Avani Shah, Cydney Sherman, Eddie Levine and Sam Brock hit some snags with their dish. Unfortunately for Eddie and Sam, their burgers and sides just weren’t good enough to save them and they were promptly eliminated.
