An 18-year-old girl from Kyrgyzstan who kept complaining about stomach pains was found to have a massive hairball blocking her stomach weighing 4 kilogrammes or 9 pounds. Ayperi Alekseeva had spent years chewing on the tips of her hair and hair she picked up from carpets, according to doctors.

Daily Mail reports the young girl could not drink or eat without being sick. When her family sought medical help, doctors had discovered what has been ailing her for years. They pulled out the large and heavy hairball in an emergency surgery. Her doctors said the teenager could have died from malnourishment and dehydration if not for the life-saving operation. Doctors said there has been no medical record of a hairball that large in 50 years.

Alekseeva's parents had finally decided to bring her to the hospital in the town of Batken after she repeatedly complained of stomach pains. Doctors examined her X-ray results and realised something was blocking her digestive system. Her case was referred to Bishkek Hospital for surgery. Bahadir Bebezov, the hospital's senior professor of surgery, said the girl was losing weight after she could not eat any food.

He said surgery was the only alternative since when he saw her, the girl could not even drink water. When doctors checked her stomach, they found it was badly swollen with clumps of hair and bits wool from the carpet. The massive hairball had "literally just oozed out" when the wall of her stomach was cut open, said Bebezov. The doctor believes the girl is normal and healthy aside from the psychological issue of picking up hair from the carpet.

Alekseeva is now recovering from surgery. She promised not to pick up hair from the carpets and chew her own hair from then on. Scientists, in a report by Medical Daily, called the girl's hairball a "trichobezoar." CNN has previously reported in 2007 the case of a woman from Chicago who had a 10-pound hairball removed from her stomach. The woman has been complaining of abdominal pain for five months. She lost 40 pounds of body weight after vomiting every time she ate. Doctors also found she had a habit of eating her hair. The woman has since recovered after surgery.
