Whether Boba Fett will make a comeback in a future “Star Wars” film is still unknown. There have been multiple reports of the character possibly appearing in the first “Star Wars” spinoff movie, now entitled “Rogue One.” However, Lucasfilm’s Pablo Hidalgo did not actually provide a definite insight into the character’s fate when asked by fans during the Star Wars Celebration Anaheim.

Pablo Hidalgo, one of the members of the Lucasfilm Story Group, was asked whether Boba Fett still has a future in the Star Wars Expanded Universe canon. Slashfilm quoted Hidalgo’s response, which ultimately meant Boba Fett’s fate depends on Lucasfilm’s Story Group finding the character the right “Star Wars” story. “Boba Fett is both simultaneously alive and dead in the Sarlaac Pit until a story pulls him out,” he said.

Hidalgo’s response clearly doesn’t address the rumours surrounding the character’s return to the Star Wars Expanded Universe canon. However, The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider once claimed that the story for “Rogue One” will involve Boba Fett and his family. According to a previous report from Slashfilm, the spinoff movie will revolve on the story of a group of characters who will try to steal the plans for the Death Star. These characters are believed to be the bounty hunters and not the Rebel Alliance.

However, the site also noted that “Star Wars: Rogue One” could just be using these bounty hunters as stand-ins for the rebels in the film. Instead of the rebels directly stealing the death star plans, they hire the hunters to retrieve it for them. Star Wars Underworld also claimed Boba Fett’s family could be among these bounty hunters. “Perhaps it was Boba Fett's family that helped the rebellion steal the Death Star plans,” writer Dominic Jones said.

Boba Fett was last seen in the 1983 film “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi,” where he supposedly met his death in the Pit of Carkoon. Fans have been anticipating the character’s return ever since Han Solo accidentally sent him flying into the pit and has since been assumed dead over the years. However, Cinema Blend noted plenty of “Legends” stories that tell Boba Fett’s survival from the pit. Perhaps Pablo Hidalgo could use one of its story to pull the character back up into the Star Wars Expanded Universe canon.
