In some parts of Asia, people in tight financial situations sell their body part, such as the kidney, even if doing so could affect their health. However, because the belly button has ceased serving any function after birth, a male teen had his surgically removed and is selling it.

Karim Boumjimar, an 18-year-old London artist, says he was inspired by the Mona Lisa painting of Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci. His reference was Mona Lisa’s lack of eyebrows or eyelashes, reports Mashable.

“It came to me – I could do the same thing with my body. We are all born with the same anatomy, and we all have the basic human structure, I just think that it’s really interesting how we all absorb that and play with the idea of how our bodies should look, we are all given the same materials and decide whether we want to alter or modify what we are given,” Dazed quotes the artist.

Besides the painting, Boumjimar cites a woman on YouTube with three breasts as his inspiration in going through illegal body modification. “She was talking about how she doesn’t need anyone’s validation and she know she has three boobs … And that’s pretty much how I feel,” says Boumjimar.

The youth likewise points to Stelarc, a body modification artist who attached his ear to his left arm. He had the nipple-removal surgery in Bosnia, facilitated by a Facebook friend.
