With Liverpool talisman Steven Gerrard bound to leave Anfield at the end of the season, manager Brendan Rodgers thinks that giving the long-serving captain one more crack at silverware would be the best tribute that the squad can give.

The Reds advanced to the next round of the knock-out format competition after the 34-year-old former Three Lions mainstay found the back of the net twice, beating AFC Wimbledon 2-1.

"Well the FA Cup final is on his birthday, so there would be no better way for us to mark it - that would be a wonderful send-off for him," said Rodgers.

"Okay, he might be getting a bit older but he'll always have that world-class ability and world-class talent."

"There are a lot of games to play but we've targeted a cup victory this season, so we're still very much in line for that moving into the second part of the season."

The Merseysiders lost their chance of winning major silverware in the ongoing campaign when they got booted out of the Champions League in the group stages. And while it is still mathematically possible to win the Premier League, it is rather viewed as a hopeless case with them trailing top 2 clubs Chelsea and Manchester City by 17 points at this juncture of the season.

Nevertheless, the third and fourth best trophies are still up for grabs in the form of the FA Cup and Capital One Cup, respectively.

"So the idea is to get a cup run, and if we can do it that would be really special of course," he added.
