Johnny Depp’s wife, Amber Heard, recently talked about sexism. The actress is one of the cast members of “The Danish Girl,” which is loosely inspired by the real-life story of Danish transgender Lili Elbe/Einar Wegener played by Eddie Redmayne.

In a recent interview with Independent, Heard talked about her personal experience on prejudices related to her sexuality rather than gender. For her, there is no need for her to deny her sexuality in order to be accepted, but her sexuality does not have to define her.

Following her relationship with the artist Tasya van Ree, she came out as bisexual in 2010. In 2015, she got married to Depp, who was one of the actors recently honoured at the Palms Springs International Film Festival, E! News reports.

For Heard, the antidote to prejudice is education and being familiar with the different facets of sexuality is the one only way to achieve change towards accepting people for who they are in a positive direction. She added that this is the way to save people from being victimized by their own prejudices and tribal instincts towards fear.

In “The Danish Girl,” Heard plays Oola Paulson, an artist friend to Redmayne’s character and his wife, Gerde Wegener played by Alicia Vikander. According to Depp’s wife, her character in the film is “all freedom” and “all spirit.”

In addition, Heard explained that her character in “The Danish Girl” is a progressive person who cares not about the superficial things but about human concerns. She said she also liked the fact that her character was part of “the new bohemia, the genesis of that movement.”

Released on Dec. 26, 2015 in Australia, “The Danish Girl” is directed by Tom Hooper. Aside from Heard, Redmayne and Vikander, the pseudo-biographical drama film also stars Adrian Schiller, Tusse Silberg, Henry Pettigrew, Claus Bue, Peter Krag, among others.

After “The Danish Girl,” Heard will star in opposite Cara Delevingne and Theo James in “London Fields.” Depp will also make an appearance in the upcoming crime thriller film directed by Matthew Cullen.
