The upcoming Apple iPhone 7 might house two cameras as part of the rear-facing snapper unit. Apple has filed a brand new patent for “small form factor telephoto camera” under the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and an Apple Insider has published a detailed report on the same.

The Apple iPhone 7 camera will reportedly make use of a similar iSight sensor unit seen in the predecessor, in addition to a small format telephoto camera. This telephoto camera will come with the ability to capture better photos by analysing parameters like depth and range which consequently gives this an advantage over the singular sensors, notes ITProPortal.

Meanwhile, the new patent shows the ways the Apple iPhone 7 dual camera can be best utilised with the capability of “adjustable iris or aperture stop.” This particular feature reportedly lets iPhone 7 users change the focal ratios from 2.4 to 10.0. To top it off, this feature will allow for a slew of customisations for each shot. Moreover, it is worth noting that the current-generation iSight camera housed in the iPhone 6 does not have this capability.

In any case, Apple fans should note that this new feature might not be part of the upgraded version of the iPhone 6, called the iPhone 6S. Instead, the feature can be expected in the 2015 flagship Apple iPhone 7. However, there is no concrete proof to say that the tech giant is indeed working on the iPhone 6S. In hindsight though, Apple iPhone’s “S” versions have always come with one or the other camera improvements.

In the meantime, ITProPortal says that there are no specific details available to ascertain how Apple will integrate this dual camera in its iPhone 7. The tech giant could either follow HTC’s lead by layering one camera underneath the other, like the HTC One M8. The other way is to house the two cameras adjacently/side-by-side. With Apple’s design philosophy of minimalism in mind, the company might integrate the two camera sensors into one external unit. In any case, there will hopefully be no protrusion of the main camera. It is worth reminding that the iPhone 6 has been criticised because of the senor unit that juts out marginally from the phone’s surface. Nonetheless, Apple has not confirmed the iPhone 7 specifications thus far.
