The OnePlus One smartphone OnePlus

The popularity of OnePlus needs no explanation. The company has sold more than 1.5 million OnePlus One smartphone across 35 countries since its launch. In an interview with Wall Street Journal, Pei expressed that OnePlus One delivered better than expected results in its first year. The company aims to develop high end quality phones while pricing it at a lower side. Besides that, OnePlus aims at positioning its products between low cost smartphones like Xiaomi and high end phones manufactured by Apple and Samsung.

OnePlus’ Journey

OnePlus was established in 2013 by Pete Lau and Carl Pei with a mission to create “best smartphones” while keeping the prices low. This called for the need to eliminate the middle men and sell the phones directly from the company’s website. When OnePlus One was launched , the company aimed at selling 30,000 units but in its first year itself, it sold 1.5 million units, reports Phonearena.com.

Now the company is all set to introduce its next model i.e OnePlus 2 on July 27 at a virtual reality event. While selling its One, the company followed the invite system, which drew a lot of negative feedback from buyers, reports NDTV Gadgets. However, Pei said that the company had to follow this method in order to balance its demand and supply.

Carl Pei and his journey

According to a report on 9 to 5 Google, Carl Pei was brought up in Sweden and has no degree. He has 9 pieces of the same T-shirt and all his belongings fits well in a couple of suitcases and a backpack. Besides that, he travels everywhere by Uber and lives in AirBnB accommodation month by month. Pei calls his journey “exhausting and emotional.” Getting the company’s phone to the market meant working endlessly with just 20 minutes of power naps between sessions, 9 to 5 Google reported.
