It’s hero against hero against hero in “Injustice 2.” NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros have finally and officially confirmed the existence of the new game with a trailer.

Coming sometime in 2017 for the PS4 and Xbox One, “Injustice 2” will be a direct sequel to the 2013 hit superhero brawler, “Injustice Gods Among Us.” It seems that the game will take off from where its predecessor had ended. Batman and company will be restoring society while also fighting against those who plan to restore Superman’s reign.

As with any superhero story, there has to be a new villain for this arc, and it’s putting the Earth’s existence at risk again. What “Injustice 2” is bringing to the table is the supposedly biggest DC roster ever in a fighting game. This means playing the big leagues like Batman, Superman, Supergirl and Aquaman, as seen in the trailer, to even villains like Gorilla Grodd and Atrocitus, as per the press release.

“In ‘Injustice 2,’ we are introducing new features that will change the way fans play fighting games,” said NetherRealm Studios Creative Director Ed Boon. “We’re always interested in pushing the genre forward and allowing players to customise and level-up their favourite DC Super Heroes and Super-Villains is a significant leap.”

The massive quality of the game does not stop there, as the sites for the battles have also expanded, including locations like Metropolis, Gotham City and Atlantis. Personalisation will also play a bigger role for “Injustice 2,” as players can now take control of how the fighters fight, look and progress in different game modes.

NetherRealm Studios Community Manger Tyler Lansdown also took to PlayStation Blog to give some general strokes on what fans can expect for the sequel. Apart from new characters and locations, the developer is also looking at evolving the environment destruction and interaction in “Injustice 2.”

Another new addition—and one that fans who have played the “Injustice Gods Among Us” mobile title may be familiar with—is the introduction of the Gear System. In the “Injustice Gods Among Us” mobile 2.0 update, NetherRealm Studios has brought in the same function, which allows players to make their roster more powerful with each equipped Gear.

In the mobile game, it did not have much of an effect in terms of visual upgrades, as only the stats of the character and his or her qualities in battle were the only ones affected. But based on the trailer, where Batman and The Flash both showcased changes in their battle suits, this customisation feature may run deeper for “Injustice 2.”

Lansdown did mention that the actual look of the character will be changed. But more than that, the fighting style and strategy that the player can have will also be different. And since the kind of upgrades and the characters that one chooses in “Injustice 2” will vary, this means that the multiplayer approach can also vary from player to player.

“As you gear up your characters, you’re building a roster of DC Super Heroes and Super-Villains that reflects your choices and your preferences, which can be vastly different from your opponents,” said Lansdown to PlayStation Blog. “A few play sessions in, you can expect your Aquaman to look and play different than anyone else’s Aquaman you may come across.”

There’s no definite date beyond the 2017 release window. But with E3 2016 coming along nicely, hopefully NetherRealm Studios can give some more clues for “Injustice 2.”
