The launch of the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 in China was not only successful, it was record-breaking. The new Mi Note 2 sold out in just 50 seconds, smashing the previous record held by the Xiaomi Mi 5.

Xiaomi has not disclosed how many units of the Mi Note 2 have been disposed, but the feat is still impressive and may have benefited from the demise of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Xiaomi made the Mi Note 2 announcement while Samsung was in the middle of the exploding Note 7 fiasco.

The Mi Note 2 also looks like its namesake, featuring a 5.7-inch display with exquisite duplex curved design on both front and back. This could also be one of the main reasons why the Mi Note 2 has gotten popular. It is a great replacement unit for former owners of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is powered by a Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 821 quad-core processor and is available in two storage and memory options: 64 GB of space with 4 GB RAM and the more efficient 128 GB with 6 GB RAM. The phone has a 22.5 MP Sony IMX318 Exmor primary camera, barometer, compass, fingerprint sensor and global LTE support.

The initial launch made the two variants of the Mi Note 2 available with the same prices when they were announced. The low end handset with the storage capacity of 64 GB and 4 GB RAM retailed for CNY 2,799 (AU$540), while the top tier model with the 128 GB storage and 6 GB RAM went for CNY 3,299 (AU$640).

The Mi Note 2 units that will be shipped globally, however, will retail for a different price. The international models are expected to be priced at about CNY 3,499 (AU$680) once they are made available.
