Xiaomi just officially launched the Galaxy Note 7 look-alike Mi Note 2, but that was just the appetiser to the main course that is the Mi Mix, a concept phone with mirror-like borderless display that will ultimately be made available in the market.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix features a custom-built 6.4-inch display at 1080 x 2040 pixel resolution and 17:9 aspect ratio. The display, which takes up over 91 percent of the phone’s front face, has ultra-thin bezels at the top and both sides that add to the mirror-like borderless look. The lone notable bezel is at the bottom where the front-facing speaker and camera are located.

Xiaomi has decided not to add any physical keys on the Mi Mix, which is also the first phone from the Chinese company to feature full touchscreen controls. The receiver and proximity sensor have also been removed from the phone’s front panel. Instead, the Mi Mix uses a cantilever piezoelectric ceramic drive unit and a built-in ultrasonic proximity sensor that works through the screen.

The whole body of the Mi Mix has full ceramic finishing. The back cover, frame and even the buttons are made of ceramic. The phone’s structure is held together by seamless connectors rather than glue, plastic or any kind of adhesive. The edgeless design was created by industrial designer Philippe Starck.

The phone is available in two versions: the 128 GB model with 4 GB RAM and the 256 GB unit with 6 GB RAM. The Xiaomi Mi Mix is backed by a Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 821 quad-core processor and a 4,400 mAh high-capacity battery with Quick Charge 3.0 that can fast charge up to 83 percent in only 30 minutes.

The Mi Mix’s 16-megapixel main shooter has phase detection autofocus and 4K support. The 5-megapixel front camera is located at the bottom right corner. The smartphone is currently available in only one colour: black.

Xiaomi is expected to launch the Mi Mix on Nov. 4. The 128 GB model with 4 GB RAM and will retail for CNY 3,499 (AU$680), while the 256 GB handset with 6 GB RAM will go for CNY 3,999 (AU$770). The Mi Mix packaging includes a leather case.
