The makers of “Independence Day 2” have roped in Jessie Usher in the lead role. Jessie is known for playing Cam Calloway in “Survivor’s Remorse” and has also worked in a string of other TV series.

He will be seen playing the son of Will Smith’s character Steven Hiller from the original "Independence Day," according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, Smith is not set to return for the sequel. Other actors who will be playing the major roles in the film include Liam Hemsworth, who will be one of the leads apart from Jessie, and Jeff Goldblum who will reprise his role of David Levinson.

“Independence Day 2” will pick up from where the 1996 original film left off, according to E Online. It will be directed by Roland Emmerich and is scheduled to be released on June 24, 2016.

The plotline of the film is not yet known and film is currently in its pre-production stage. Emmerich had said in one his previous interviews that once he gets the script for the film, he will start production.

“Independence Day [2] is my next movie if I get the right script," he said to Empire. "I should get the script pretty soon, then I’ll try to get it into good shape for one or two months, and if that happens, we’ll announce it and start production.”

Meanwhile, much recently Emmerich took to Instagram to share news of the film’s casting. He posted Liam and Jeff’s photo and captioned it as “Excited to officially announce @LiamHemsworth and #JeffGoldblum as the next two pieces of the #IndependenceDay sequel.”

“Independence Day” was a major box office success and it launched Will Smith to superstardom. The film made $817,400,891 worldwide. It followed the story a group who comes together and saves the human population from an alien attack, which is scheduled to take place on the United States' independence day. The screenplay of the film was written Roland and it starred Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Mary McDonnell Margaret Colin, Randy Quaid, Robert Loggia, James Rebhorn, Vivica A. Fox, and Harry Connick, Jr.
