HTC One M9 owners can now upgrade their handsets with crDroid’s latest custom firmware based on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. The new firmware will bring overall performance improvement and new additions for the handset.

Last July, almost all major US carriers rolled out a new update for the HTC One M9, with the exception of Verizon. This means that HTC One M9 users who are also subscribers of T-Mobile, AT&T and Sprint should have gotten access to the Android 5.1 Lollipop update. The above mentioned US carriers may also release the Android 5.1.1 for HTC One M9 before the launch of Android M.

The new custom firmware will bring new features like AdBlocker, blacklist options and Omni-Ambient display, reported Neurogadget. Additionally, there will be customisation options, Force expanded notification option and Expand Status Bar with Quick Access button. Moreover, there will be SlimRoms custom lockscreen shortcuts, DND (do not disturb), turn on/off navigation bar and SlimPie controls.

Team Android provided a full set of instructions and tutorial in installing the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update onto the HTC One M9. When proceeding with the installation, there are few things that HTC One M9 owners should bear in mind.

Installation of custom ROM is a technical procedure and requires technical expertise and knowledge of basic troubleshooting. Before proceeding with the installation, users need to be properly equipped to start the process. The steps mentioned in the guide (see Team Android link below) will help set up crDroid Android 5.1.1 Lollipop only on an HTC One M9 mobile device.

HTC One M9 users are also advised to only try it on that particular device, as it may not work and may even cause damage to other units. Necessary precautions should also be taken such as ensuring that the HTC One M9 is rooted and that data in the device have been fully backed up.

The installation of the ROM itself would require the user to perform the wipe clean. All the necessary USB drivers must be pre-installed for the PC to identify the HTC gizmo. Last, but definitely not the least, charging the smartphone is mandatory. If it is not fully charged, ensure that the device is juiced at least 80 per cent to avoid interruptions during the installation.

Setting-up custom ROM on handset is a slow and lengthy process. Users need to have patience during the procedure. The step-by-step guide to install crDroid Android 5.1.1 Lollipop on HTC One M9 can be read at Team Android .
