“Hotel Transylvania 2,” which released on Sept. 25 in the U.S., has scored the biggest September opening, earning USD 48.5 million at the box office (AUD 69.37 million)

With its record breaking opening weekend collection, the film has overshadowed its predecessor’s, “Hotel Transylvania,” opening at the box office, Deadline reported. The original film, released in 2012, collected USD 42.5 (AUD 60.78 million) in its opening weekend.

All thanks to the box office success of both the films in this franchise, the makers are hinting at third edition. “There are a lot of stories left to tell,” Rory Bruer, president at Sony Pictures Entertainment, said to Variety.

Meanwhile, “Hotel Transylvania 2” is now standing at the summit of top sequels. It has surpassed the opening box-office collection of “Monsters University”, “Rio 2”, “How to Train Your Dragon 2” and “Ice Age: The Meltdown” by a decent margin.

“Hotel Transylvania 2” has also given Sony Pictures Animation its biggest ever weekend opening, Deadline reported. It was made with a budget of $80 million, and in the opening weekend itself, it has collected more than half of its production cost.

This is the fourth instance in the last three weeks that a film from Sony Pictures has topped the box-office collection list. After “The Perfect Guy”, a thriller, and “War room”, a faith-based movie, it is now the animated comedy that is doing wonders for Sony Pictures. “We’re on a roll right now,” Rory Bruer said. "This is a huge opening”

"Hotel Transylvania 2" is a story about a vampire Mavis (Selena Gomez) and human Jonathan (Andy Samberg) and their cute little son, Dennis. The family still is not certain if their child is a vampire, and whether he is going to follow his grandfather's, Dracula, legacy. When Dennis does not grow fangs by the time he turns five, his parents decide to move to California, making Grandpa Drac to hurry along those fangs on the youngster. This starts a rollercoaster ride, with Dracula's monster friends joining it.

Hotel T2 has failed to entice the critics. The Guardian's film critic has said that it is “Flat annoying and lacking in bite." It might not be critically acclaimed but its box office roar is doing the job for the studio.

“Hotel Transylvania 2” is set to release on Nov. 26, 2015 in Australia.
