At the private screening of Homeland Season 3 in Washington City on Sept. 9, the lead actors for Showtime’s hit series could not help but drop hints of what to expect in the upcoming season. Underscoring that this is a “dark” season for the highly anticipated drama thriller, stars hinted that more conflict and heartbreak dominate leading up to season four.

Speaking to Access Hollywood in Washington Monday, Claire Daines, who plays Carrie Mathison in the series, noted that Homeland Season 3 is “sober” at the beginning of series 3.

“It’s very sober in tone in the beginning of the third season,” Daines said, adding at the premiere screening held at Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., “[The agency is] really are facing the consequences of having failed to anticipate that attack and the devastation obviously was profound and they’re in a time of shock still and real mournfulness.”

Daines emphasized that Carrie feels “responsible” for the terrorist attacks that killed top officials in the CIA and the U.S. witnessed at the finale of Homeland Season 2.

She added, “They’re grieving and I think Carrie feels, she felt responsible for 9/11. [And] boy, does she feel responsible for this incident!”

Damian Lewis who portrays the character of Iraq war veteran turned terrorist, Sgt. Nicholas Brody also dropped hints on the future of his character, which he emphasized as highly “very uncertain.”

“You’re gonna see a guy who’s on the run. He is… the most wanted man on the globe, and I think the question is, ‘Has Brody been taken care of by the ex-filtration process and the CIA, or has he been abandoned?’” the lead actor in Showtime’s hit series told Access Hollywood. “Those are probably two questions you can ask yourself. So where will they find him and what condition will they find him in?”

Another major recurring character, Mandy Patinkin, who plays Saul Berenson in Homeland, has for his part, all good words for the show’s writers, who he believes have done a real good job to make Season 3 more “thrilling” than it has ever been.

"I think [these writers] go into new territory that I haven't imagined. I'm already able to see where some possibilities are existing for season four by what's happening and I think these writers are as good as they come or have ever been," he said, according to Telegraph UK.

The stars of Homeland were in attendance at the private screening of the show’s Season 3 in Washington D.C. on Sept. 9. Hosted by Fox 21 and Showtime, the event provided a venue for the stars to get together and share initial publicities before the show kicks off later this month.

Homeland Season 3 premieres on Showtime, Sept. 29, 2013, 9p.m.
