A Golden Retriever named Colby, owned by Allison Marks of Powhatan County in Virginia, possibly died due to heat stroke after a very long grooming session at Petco. The 2-year-old dog was groomed at a Richmond outlet of Petco when the incident happened.

The death of the pet on May 29 was likely triggered by the use of a hair dryer which led the pet grooming shop to fire the employees directly involved in Colby’s death. The shop also stopped using that particular type of hair dryer and took responsibility on Thursday for the animal’s death, reports Associated Press.

Petco’s investigation found that the employees didn’t follow animal care protocols while grooming Colby. The shop said, “We are also using this incident to reinforce our standards of care and will be conducting nationwide sessions to reinforce this training with grooming salon team members in every Petco store next week,” quotes USA Today.

The dog was left in a heated cage to dry. When Marks came to pick up her pet, she was surprised to learn that Colby was brought to the veterinarian where the animal was declared dead. Petco has also removed all drying cages from its stores, according to Fox News.

The probe found that the groomer left the Golden Retriever accidentally in one of the drying cages to attend a graduation party. The family is in shock over the death of Colby. Petco adds, “Pet parents place their trust in us, and we realize that trust is earned. We understand there is no way to make up for the loss of Colby, and our thoughts continue to be with his family during this difficult time.”
