Gengar, an original part of the first 150 Pokemon, is set to make its fighting game debut in “Pokken Tournament.” The little round monstrosity joins several other fan-favourites like Pikachu, Blaziken, Machamp and Lucario, in the first ever arcade Pokemon fighting game, developed by Bandai Namco the creators of the hit fighting game series’ “Tekken” and “Soul Calibur.”

The ghost Pokemon was introduced to the “Pokken” roster, through a livestream hosted by Katsuhhiro Harada, who was dressed as a giant Pikachu for the occasion. As stated by a report from Polygon, Gengar is only the seventh character to be revealed for “Pokken Tournament,” as neither Nintendo nor Bandai Namco, have confirmed the number of playable Pokemon that will be in the game, once it is released for arcades.

Like a good number of characters in the game, Gengar will have a nice mix of close and long range attacks, as the game requires players to get used to the two different methods of fighting in the game. Kotaku notes that Gengar will also be one of the few Pokemon in the game who will have the ability to mega-evolve and cause some serious damage to the opposing Pocket Monster.

According to an article from IGN, Gengar’s inclusion in the game was due to a Twitter campaign that ran back in the August of 2014, when “Pokken Tournament” was originally announced. It’s currently unsure if other characters in the game will be determined through a Twitter campaign as well.

Despite not getting a Western release yet, “Pokken Tournament” still has many fans excited for the “Pokemon” fighting game. The arcade brawler is the first official “Pokemon” fighting game after all, with titles like “Pokemon Stadium” still relying on turn-based combat, like in the original “Pokemon” games, rather than actual fighting game controls.

“Pokken Tournament” is currently slated for a summer release for arcades in Japan. As the date draws near, fans can probably expect a few more fighters that will be announced. Considering that there are currently 721 Pokemon to date, there is an endless list of possibilities as to who the next fighter will be.
