Executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss spoke about some of the characters and events in “Game of Thrones” Season 5. The new season introduced characters from the kingdom of Dorne and showed a new side to characters like Sansa and Stannis. [Spoiler Alert!]

Three daughters of the now deceased Oberyn Martel, known as the Sand Snakes, were introduced in “Game of Thrones” Season 5. The three sisters were keen on going to war in the recently aired episode titled “Sons of the Harpy.” D.B. Weiss explained in this video, posted on the official Facebook page of the TV series, how their way of thinking is different from that of Doran.

The Sand Sisters are filled with rage after hearing about the death of their father at King’s Landing. The sisters have grown up hearing stories about how the Lannisters had wronged them during the rebellion against the previous dynasty. D.B. Weiss explained in the video that the Sand Snakes were not responsible for the nation the way Prince Doran is. A war against the Lannisters is more personal for them.

Sansa Stark finally returned to her ancestral home at Winterfell in “Game of Thrones” Season 5. David Benioff noted how she always wanted to leave Winterfell when she was younger and live in King’s Landing. According to the executive producer, she appreciates her home as well as her family much more than before. “I think she feels more like a Stark than she ever has before,” David Benioff said.

David Benioff also hinted at Petyr Baelish’s strategy. The former Master of Coin quickly became the Lord of Harrenhal and also has control over the young Robin Arryn of the Vale. If Stannis conquers the north in “Game of Thrones” Season 5 and names Sansa as the Wardeness of the north, his influence over her would make him a formidable character in all of Westeros.

Fans of the franchise also got to see Stannis Baratheon in a different light in “Game of Thrones” Season 5. “We are so used to seeing Stannis in the single-minded pursuit of the Iron Throne,” D. B. Weiss said in the video. The executive producer added that the character was able to do this by removing any complications in his life.

Stannis’ love towards his daughter may be seen as one such complication that may distract him. D. B. Weiss opined that the love tempers Stannis, something that the character can’t “afford” at this point of time in “Game of Thrones” Season 5. Viewers did, however, get to see the character’s love for his daughter in the previous episode of the TV series.
