The recently aired episode of “Game of Thrones” Season 5, titled “High Sparrow,” showed the journey of two Stark children on two different continents. An official HBO report draws parallels between the story of Arya Stark and Jon Snow. [Spoiler alert]

Jon Snow has become the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, while Arya Stark is the new apprentice at the House of Black and White. According to a report by Katie M. Lucas of HBO, posted on MakingGameofThrones, there are common elements in the journey of the two characters.

In “Game of Thrones” Season 5, both Jon Snow and Arya Stark were made to choose an identity for themselves. They both chose to renounce their identity as Stark and embraced their new role.

Jon Snow could have been a Stark, with Stannis’ support and reclaim the lands of Ned Stark. Arya Stark on the other hand was told by Jaqen H’ghar or the Faceless man that she will have to let go of her identity of Arya Stark in order to become a master assassin under him. Jon chose to remain in the Night’s Watch and refuse Stannis, while Arya let go of all her belongings that identified her as a Stark.

The one item that Arya did not drown with her other belongings was her sword Needle. Readers who have been following the “Game of Thrones” TV series will remember that the sword was given to Arya by Jon Snow as a present. So, Arya has not fully let go of her identity as a Stark.

Jon Snow on the other hand also showed a character trait that Ned Stark was known for, when he swung his sword to behead Janos Slynt. Ned Stark always said that “the man who passes the sentence should swing the sword.” So, Jon and Arya still have a Stark connection in them, while they take up their new positions.

Kit Harington discussed the execution of Janos Flynt in the video below. He pointed out that by killing Janos, Jon was unknowingly avenging the death of Ned Stark. Janos was one of the men responsible for the arrest and consequent execution of Ned Stark in the first season of “Game of Thrones.”
