In a recent interviw, Gewndoline Christie gave some insight about her character Brienne in “Game of Thrones” Season 5. She also discussed some of the other characters that Brienne met in this season and explained the emotional state of her character. [Spoiler Alert!]

Brienne of Tarth began at a difficult place, emotionally, in “Game of Thrones” Season 5. She was not able to convince Arya to join her in the previous season and in this season Sansa refused her request as well. Gwendoline Christie spoke to HBO about the recent events in the show, and a transcript of the interview has been made available by the producers on the MakingGameofThrones website.

The actress said that it was “a little heartbreaking” to see such a strong character go through such a difficult period on the show, but she added that such challenging scenes makes it “wonderful” to play the character. She described the state of mind of the character as “emotional destitution.”

In “Game of Thrones” Season 5, Brienne encounters Petyr Baelish and Sansa Stark. She quickly offers her services to protect Sansa, only to be reminded of all her past failures by Petyr. Gwendoline says that Little Finger has “such a brilliant and sharp mind” that he knows exactly what to say to “cripple” Brienne and he apparently succeeds.

Brienne had hoped that Sansa would accept her oath the same way her mother Catelyn accepted her oath. But Sansa’s rejection did not stop her and she continued to follow her to the north. According to Gwendoline, Brienne has a “tunnel vision” and the only thing on her mind is her objective. This supposedly makes her “unstoppable.”

The actress described her character in “Game of Thrones” Season 5 as someone with a “badass” exterior but at the same time having a very “pure heart.” She feels she failed “on a very basic level” at protecting Renly, whom she loved very deeply, and now she hopes to make up for that by doing more good.

Gwendoline refused to comment on the developing relationship between Brienne and Jamie. “There's something about that dynamic that not even those guys know what's going on,” the actress teased about the relationship. She did not, however, say whether the two characters, who are far apart at the moment, will get to cross paths again in “Game of Thrones” Season 5.
