Fans have long anticpated a remake of “Final Fantasy VII,” and game developer Square Enix responded to the clamour by officially beginning work on the game. The crowd roared as Square Enix unveiled a highly detailed and updated trailer for the upcoming “Final Fantasy VII Remake” at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, in June. With little to know about the remake, fans play the waiting game as Square Enix slowly gives players a taste of what to expect from the title.

In an interview with Gematsu, producer Yoshinori Kitase revealed that the game’s title visuals are coming along smoothly. However, the combat system for the remake is yet to be determined as Square Enix is still currently on the experimentation process. Kitase further revealed that they are working on an overhaul to the classic turn-based system found in the original game. The old battle system for “Final Fantasy VII” plays similar to previous titles, wherein both players and enemies take turns in doing actions after a set time.

“We’re starting to see the visual direction,” Kitase said, pertaining to the title visuals. He added, “On the other hand, we’re currently working out the battle system and such through trial-and-error. Since there’s a possibility that the old command battle system of the old days might not work today, we’re thinking hard about what kind of direction we can take it.”

Kitase also admitted that creating a remake is a painstaking process. Square Enix has to deliver the same game that captivated players in its 1997 launch, but it should also bring something new at the same time. This basically means that the developer is trying to give players a sense of nostalgia with the remake, but it does not want to turn away any possible innovation that could make the game even better. Director Tetsuya Nomura said that players should expect “dramatic changes” to the game’s battle system, IGN reports.
