For many people, the temperature at night plays a vital role in their sleeping comfortably. A former National and Space Administration (NASA) engineer has developed a noise-dampener blower that adjust the temperature of the mattress to suit personal preferences.

Mark Aramli, founder of BedJet, came up with the idea of rapid cooling, heating and night sweat management system for beds when his mother was recovering from surgery. The BedJet warms the bedding of a king-size bed to a toasty feel in just 180 seconds, eliminating winter “sheet shock.”

It works through a ventilation cooling system that disperses accumulated body moisture and body heat from the bed nearly instantly. BedJet delivers tremendous relief to those suffering from night sweats or bedtime hot flashes, making it a popular product among menopausal women. It operates through an intuitive bedside remote control, making it the bedding industry’s first product to integrate users bedding temperature and sleep comfort preferences with smartphones and tablets using integrated Bluetooth.

However, Aramli, who was responsible for the space suit’s primary life support system (PLSS), specifically elements relating to heating, cooling and climactic comfort of the interior space suit environment for the astronauts, clarifies that BedJet is not a substitute for an air con. He adds that the product works best in temperatures below 78 degrees Fahrenheit.

When Aramli set a goal of $24,000 (AUD$33,890) for a Kickstarter funding in 2015, the tag price for contributors was $249 (AUD$352) or half the regular price of $499 (AUD$705), reports VentureBeat. Because of the project’s success, it is now one of the Top 10 Kickstarters of all time, closing on pre-orders of $1.4 million (AUD$1.98 million) in 39 days.

While there are other temperature-regulating products on the market, such as ChiliPad and Night Bliss, BedJet is a smart bed because it wakes up the sleeper in the morning without an alarm clock. That’s because BedJet has a pre-programmed app, accessed before sleeping, which heats up the mattress at the preferred waking hour of the sleeper, reports Huffington Post.

Dr Jordan Stern, founder of BlueSleep Center in New York, adds that BedJet improves sleep because lowering body temperature before slumber – which could also be done by a warm bath – helps doze off faster. But he points out that the mattress’s alarm system may not work for some people because their bodies may not be sensitive to subtle heat.
