Germany and USA advance in yet another group of death and it was an upset for Portugal who boast among their ranks the 2013 FIFA World Player of te year, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Portugal needed USA to lose to have even the slightest hope of advancing after only taking one point from their first two group stage matches. Germany were able to help when Mueller found the back of the net on the 55th minute giving Germany the lead. Even Ghana helped by opening the scoring for Portugal with an own goal by John Boye. Asamoah Gyan took one back for Ghana in the 57th minute and things just kept looking worse for Portugal. Finally, Cristiano Ronaldo had a breakthrough with 10 minutes to go in regulation time but his goal gave Portugal the win and not the qualification spot. The 4-0 thrashing they received from Germany in their opening group match haunted them and put them below the USA on goal difference despite the USA's loss to the Germans.

Germany and the USA needed only a draw to see both teams advance and there were speculations going around that match fixing might become a factor even with the last two matches in the group being played simultaneously. The Germans proved the speculations wrong as they pressed forward right from the start and put the USA defense under immense pressure. The USA for their part also had their fare share of attacks in the moments when they are able to wrestly the ball away from the Germans. There were moments of Spanish style tiki-taka fotball employed by the Germans but the number of attackes proved that they were out to win and not settle for a draw.

Both teams celebrated at the Pernambuco stadium at the end of the match when they were informed of the result of the other match that took place at Estadio Nacional in Brasilia.
