ISIL beheading

A masked Islamic State militant holding a knife speaks next to man purported to be U.S. journalist James Foley at an unknown location in this still image from an undated video posted on a social media website. Islamic State insurgents released the video on August 19, 2014 purportedly showing the beheading of Foley, who had gone missing in Syria nearly two years ago, and images of another U.S. journalist whose life they said depended on U.S. action in Iraq. The video, titled "A Message toAmerica," was released a day after Islamic State, an al Qaeda offshoot that has overrun large parts of Iraq, threatened to attack Americans "in any place." Australia may be thousands of kilometres away from the Middle East where the Islamic State (IS) is on a beheading frenzy, having decapitated so far three foreigners, American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff and Briton aid worker David Haines.

However, a new order from the extremist militant group, places Aussies at risk of being beheaded without stepping in Syria or Iraq, following an order from IS spokesman Muhammad Adnani for jihadists to attack Aussies and other nationals "in any means possible" as retaliation for being part of a coalition to crush the IS.

Adnani said, quoted by The Sydney Morning Herald, "If you can kill a disbelieving American or European - especially the spiteful and filthy French - or an Australian, or a Canadian, or any other disbeliever from the disbelievers waging war, including the citizens of the countries that entered into a coalition against the Islamic State, then rely upon Allah, and kill him in any manner or way however it may be."

He added, "Do not ask for anyone's advice and do not seek anyone's verdict. Kill the disbeliever, whether he is civilian or military, for they have the same ruling. Both of them are disbelievers."

Australia has committed to join the US-initiated effort to crush the IS after the group beheaded 4 people. World leaders are slated to meet at the New York headquarters of the UN to tackle how to stem the arrival of jihadists in Iraq and Syria.

Adnani belittled the contribution of Australia to the coalition as he told IS supporters, "What threat do you pose to the distant place of Australia for it to send its legions towards you? If the parties have gathered against you, then know they gathered against your Prophet."

In response to the IS threat, a spokeswoman for Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said, "ISIL will claim that our involvement in this international effort is the reason they are targeting us, but these people do not attack us for what we do, but for who we are and how we live."

The PM said he considers the threat from Adnani an authentic statement from a terror organisation. Mr Abbott said that because of this new threat, the federal government may have to clip some freedom for Aussies to prevent attacks from jihadists sent by the IS.
