Taiwan Cares. This is the message some groups of Taiwanese nationals have for Overseas Filipino Workers who are currently working in the country and have become the silent victims of the political conflict brought by the unfortunate shooting that killed a Taiwanese national in early May.

Organised by local groups in Taipei City, a day of fun-filled activities has brought smiles to Filipinos based in many cities in Taiwan, allowing them to forget the May 9 incident that have somehow affected their stay in the country.

A group called, 4-Way Voice and other Taiwanese advocates organised a day of concert, live performances and gift-giving held at Fu Shung Park, Taipei City on May 26, 2013.

An estimated 1,000 Filipinos attended the one-day event and they were in for a treat not only of live music and great performances but also of some gifts including t-shirt, food and phone cards.

With theme, “You Are Not Alone,” a popular slogan popularised following the assassination of former Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino in the 1980s reverberated and was widely felt in the event that was designed to help Filipinos working in Taiwan heave a sigh of relief after the unfortunate fatal shooting of Hung Shih-Chen by the Philippine coast guards in Balintang Island on May 9.

46-year-old Edec Del Rosario, an OFW from Nueva Ecija said that the move is a way to strengthen the friendship between Taiwan and Philippines, now riddled with political conflict and feared to cause an opening of a bigger can of worms that may reignite the conflicts the two countries have had for years.

“The event today was organised most by some Taiwanese nationals who want to express sympathy for the bigger number of OFWs affected by the killing of the Taiwanese fisherman,” Mr del Rosario said in an exclusive interview with IBTImes-AU.

Meanwhile, Yun-Chan Liao, a member of the 4-Way Voice in Taiwan and who oversaw the one-day solidarity event in Taipei over the weekend, is confident that the event has achieved its main objective.

“I think what achieved in the event was primarily to make people feel happy; that Filipinos somehow felt that Taiwan is a safe place for them; that even if they meet some unfortunate incidents, Taiwanese nationals largely appreciate the OFWs,” Liao said in the same interview with IBTimes-AU after the one-day activity in FuShung Park.

The gathering organisers say it is just the beginning of the many collaboration between Filipinos and Taiwanese nationals in Taiwan to help OFWs cope with the circumstances that they have been under since the unfortunate killing of a Taiwanese fisherman by the Philippine Coast Guards.
