While addressing the public during a lecture in Stockholm, Sweden, the renowned physicist Stephen Hawking claimed that he has a way to escape out of the black holes. The claim by Hawking has raised the important question in the mind of the different researchers regarding whether Hawking has solved the greatest mystery associated with the black holes.

Black holes are known to originate when a massive star dies out because of its own gravity. As a result, a strong gravitational pull is created that does not let anything pass through. Anything that falls through the black hole is gone forever.

The physics associated with the formation of the black hole gave birth to years-old debate known as the “black hole information paradox.” In such a paradox, the quantum mechanics researchers argue that the information associated with whatever falls in the black hole is never destroyed. On the other hand, general relativity suggests that such information must be destroyed. What happens to the physical state of the objects that fall inside the black hole is still a mystery.

Now, during a scientific talk at the Hawking Radiation Conference held on Aug 25, Hawking claimed that the information never goes inside of the black hole. Instead, the information is stored at the boundary of the black hole.

“I propose that the information is stored not in the interior of the black hole as one might expect, but on its boundary, the event horizon,” Hawking said during the lecture.

The event horizon refers to the sphere around the black hole which lets nothing escape its clutches. According to Hawking, the information regarding anything that passes through the black hole is converted into a 2D or a 3D hologram and stored in its periphery. The physicist now suggests that Hawking radiation picks up some of the information emitted from the event horizon due to quantum fluctuations which then escapes out.

Hawking introduced the concept of Hawking radiation in 1970s. It refers to the photons emitted from the black holes due to quantum fluctuations. Initially, he thought that it carried no information. However, in 2004, the researchers said that it is possible that the Hawking radiation carries some information out.

“The information about ingoing particles is returned, but in a chaotic and useless form. This resolves the information paradox. For all practical purposes, the information is lost,” concluded the researcher during the lecture.

“The message of this lecture is that black holes ain’t as black as they are painted. They are not the eternal prisons they were once thought. Things can get out of a black hole both on the outside and possibly come out in another universe.”
