The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, and Prince William welcomed the newest addition to the royal family, a healthy baby girl.

According to Mirror, Her Royal Highness Kate Middleton checked into St. Mary’s Hospital in London at around 6 am on May 2 as she entered the first stages of labor. The Duchess and her husband, Prince William, did not try to find out the gender of their second child beforehand, just as they did with their firstborn, Prince George. At 8:34 am BST, Kate Middleton gave birth to a healthy little princess with Prince William by her side at the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital.

The official announcement of the newborn was made by the Kensington Palace via email and a Twitter post saying, “Her royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a daughter at 8.34 am.” A tweet followed saying that the baby girl weighs 8 lbs. 3 oz. and that both Her Royal Highness and her child are doing well. “The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales & The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry & members of both families have been informed,” Kensington Palace said.

As of now, the baby girl’s name has not yet been announced but bookmakers are betting high on the hot baby name choices Alice and Charlotte.

At approximately 4 pm, Prince William left the Lindo Wing to pick up Prince George from the Kensington Palace to meet his new sister. A few moments later, they arrived back at the hospital, marking Prince George’s first official public appearance in Britain since the day after his birth.

Two hours later, Yahoo! reported that the Royal couple exited St. Mary’s Hospital with the new baby princess in her mother’s arms. The couple stood briefly by the hospital doors to show off the newborn to the world’s media before walking back into the hospital. A few minutes later, the couple walked out again directly to their car and drove back to the palace.

BBC reported that with the new rule enforced last March removing male bias from the succession rules, the baby princess is fourth in line to the throne, knocking Prince Harry down to fifth. The baby’s grandfather Prince Charles is first in line followed by her father Prince William and then her brother Prince George. When Prince George grows up and has his own children, the princess will become the “spare” to the heir tag just like her uncle Prince William.

The princess will not lose her line to the throne even with the birth of any future younger brothers or by marriage to a Roman Catholic. She will be known as the Princess of Cambridge, as issued by the Queen in a Letter Patent.
