The upcoming Season 6 is the swansong season of British period drama series “Downton Abbey.” Julian Fellowes, creator of the show, has revealed the theme of the final season, while executive producer Gareth Neame has indicated that Mary's romantic life will be explored in the upcoming season as well.

“Resolution” is the theme of “Downton Abbey” Season 6, Fellowes told The Wrap. He also said that the previous season was about change overtaking the residents at Downton, and Season 3 was about Mary’s redemption, her personal choice.

Fellowes, the solo writer of the popular series, has written all the episodes of “Downton Abbey.” He intends to tie up the main themes of the series in the final season. “I don’t think everything has to be tied up, but I think there are main themes that have to be tied up,” Fellowes told The Wrap, adding that the last episode should make one feel contended, not cheated. He does not want his show to end on a “clever twist” that makes one feel cheated.

The original plan was to end the series after Season 5 but they realised that they would not be able to wind up everything in one season. “And so that’s what we’ve done with six. But we were never tempted to do more,” he said to The Wrap.

Meanwhile, executive producer Gareth Neame has told Deadline.com that the upcoming season will feature “big events” and the highs and lows that one expects from a series finale. Speaking about Mary's romantic storyline, he said, “… Mary’s romantic life has been a constant focus since Matthew’s death and is likely to remain so.”

The production on the final season of “Downton Abbey” is still underway. The photos from the set reveal that Ms Hughes (Phyllis Logan) and Mr Carson (Jim Carter) are set to tie the knot in the final season. Tom Branson (Allen Leech) looks like never went to America and if he did go there, he must have returned soon, as the actor was seen filming at Brooklands Museum in Surrey, England, which was the site of the historic Brooklands race track circuit that shut down in 1939, according to reports.

Also reports suggest that Matthew Goode is returning to reprise his role as Henry Tablot, though there is no official confirmation on that. He was reportedly seen filming with Tom Cullen, who plays Lord Gillingham, at the same location.
