If American football has Tim Tebow who openly shows his Christian faith by kneeling on one knee, resting one arm on the other knee and bowing his head in prayer - more known as Tebowing - boxing has Filipino champ Manny Pacquiao kneeling on both knees on his ring corner and praying before he starts a fight.

Pacquiao, who fought American boxer Chris Algieri on Nov 22, is not afraid to show his Catholic upbringing in the tough and macho world of boxing by consistently seeking God's blessings before his bouts which obviously worked because he has won 56 of his 63 professional fights, of which 38 were knockouts.

On Saturday, he further improved his record to 57 wins by beating Algieri through unanimous decision.

But it is not just Pacquiao who taps on the power of prayer for his ring victory. His 65-year-old mother, Dionesia, has been known for locking herself up in a prayer room, together with her female friends, and storming heaven's gates throughout the 12 rounds, unless her son ended the fight early by knocking out his opponent early in the match.

However, during Manny's bout against Timothy Bradley in April, she watched the bout held also in Macau and openly prayed for her son's victory. She gained international media attention because of the way she interceded by closing her eyes and pointing her fingers at the boxers, which some media thought that she was "hexing" Bradley. She appeared to be "casting out" some spirits, as Christians would put it.

After the bout, Dionesia went up the ring, embraced Bradley and apologised for praying for his loss.

A devout Roman Catholic, Dionesia would definitely not practice hexing as it goes against her faith. In fact, she even had some disagreement with her son when he became a born-again Christian which she blamed for his loss to Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez on their third rematch.

However, mother-and-son pair has reconciled since and learned to live with each other faith as well as other differences such as Dionesia - who is separated from Manny's father for a long time - having a 40-year-old boyfriend who is even part of the 300 plus entourage of Pacquiao.

For Manny's fight with Algieri, Dionesia again unleashed her prayer power, which obviously worked again based on the results of Saturday's epic fight. Surely, Adriana Algieri, the mum of Chris who admitted the family is also a fan of Manny, could pick a few lessons on "hexing" or prayer power from Dionesia.

For his part, Manny got the approval of Top Rank Promotions for born-again Christian pastors to sing the Philippine national anthem, in the process ditching American Idol runner-up Jessica Sanchez.

With speculations that Pacquiao's victory would lead to the dream match against Floyd Mayweather Jr in 2015, perhaps Floyd Mayweather Sr should also learn prayer power and stop relying on trash talk which appears to have worked for the Money Team.
