Add Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to the list of probable opponents for Manny Pacquiao. While there are already multiple reports that there are on-going discussions to make the Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao happen in 2015, Oscar De La Hoya, Alvarez’s promoter has said that his ward wants to fight the top boxers today and that includes both Pacquiao and Mayweather.

“He wants to go and fight Miguel Cotto, he wants to fight Mayweather, he wants to fight Pacquiao,” De La Hoya said via KLTV channel in Los Angeles. “He wants to fight the top, top guys. This kid is 24 years old, he is going to be the next superstar unboxing for like the next 10 years.

Alvarez (won 44-1-1, 31 KOs) already fought Mayweather Jr. (47-0-0, 26 KOs) on Sept. 13, 2013 but lost that bout via split decision. A rematch with Mayweather remains a viable option for both and an appealing match for the boxing fans as the Mexican even managed a close affair with the judges scoring it 116-112, 114-114, 117-111 for the undefeated American. However, Alvarez has since left CBS/Showtime and joined rival HBO Sports in a controversial move that was supposedly masterminded by none other than Oscar De La Hoya.

The Alvarez vs. Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) pairing is now a likely scenario considering that they now both fight under HBO Sports. However, the obstacle for this marquee match-up is the difference in weight and the weight class. Alvarez fights in the super welterweight/junior middleweight (154 lbs.) while Pacquiao campaigns in the welterweight division (147 lbs)— and even that’s a stretch for Pacquiao, who often demands for a catchweight at 144 lbs as seen in his most recent fight in Macau against Chris Algieri.

Still, the Pacquiao vs. Alvarez match-up is an appealing one for boxing fans because of the attacking, aggressive offensive style of both fighters. Re-living the rivalry of Mexico vs. Philippines is also another good angle to sell the fight considering Pacquiao has had classic encounters with Mexican legends like Eric Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera and most recently, Juan Manuel Marquez.

Alvarez has yet to fully recover from his injury that caused him to pull out in December fight against Joshua Clottey. If the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao super fight does not happen anytime soon, the rising boxing star along with top promoter De La Hoya might just enter the scene and set-up the outhwatering clash that is Pacquiao vs. Alvarez
