While Hollywood A-lister Angeline Jolie had a post-surgery interview to share to the world her double mastectomy surgery, British newsreader Bridgid Nzekwu held a boobs party prior to undergoing the same medical procedure.

The 42-year-old ITV presenter shared her ordeal in an article published in The Sunday Times this week.

She invited 30 female friends to the party held three days before the surgery. "We toasted by departing assets' and the girls joke about how envious they will be of the new, tummy-tucked body I'll be rocking after the operation," she wrote.

Ms Nzekwu was diagnosed with Hodgin's disease, a cancer of the lympathic system, in 1998 when she was only 18 and underwent extensive radiotherapy and chemotherapy that made her bald and suffer from other after effects such as shingles, viruses and infections.

She eventually married Martin and they have a son, Oscar.

She found that the disease came back in April 2012 when she felt a lump in her left breast. Medical tests confirmed she had breast cancer, the same ailment that took the life of her 59-year-old mother.

Although her right breast is healthy, there was no guarantee it would not be affected, so rather than take the risk, she decided to have both breasts removed since she could no longer go through the same treatment since she had her maximum allowable dose of radiation when she was 18.

After her double mastectomy and breast reconstruction, Ms Nzekwu's risk of getting cancer in her healthy breast drastically went down to 2 per cent from the average of 25 per cent for women in their early 40s.

"To me it's a ticking time bomb. I know immediately I want a double mastectomy. I feel in a state of perfect clarity. The only thing that's important is to get this cancer out of me and do anything in my power to prevent it from coming back," she added.

She has recovered from the surgery and is looking forward to resume her media work.
