K2 Promotions managing director Tom Loeffler said he is planning to pair WBO, IBO, IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin with WBC flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez in the undefeated Kazakh’s first fight in 2016.

Loeffler, who recently became Gonzalez’s stateside representative, is plotting a boxing event that will once again feature the dynamic duo of “GGG” and “Chocolatito.”

“I think it’s been such a successful combination with Roman together with Gennady, we’ll try to do it at least one more time for the first fight in 2016,” Loeffler told Boxing Scene.

The first time Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) and Gonzalez (44-0, 38 KOs) were paired was on May 17, when the Kazakh knockout artist stopped Willie Monroe Jr. in six rounds, while Gonzalez swiftly took Edgar Souza in two rounds. They were again paired as co-headliners last month when “GGG” took out David Lemieux in eight rounds and Gonzalez defeated Brian Viloria in nine rounds.

There is a chance Loeffler’s plans would fall with Golovkin’s fight against WBC middleweight champ Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who was mandated by the governing body to defend his title belt against the Kazakhstan boxer. However, Alvarez’s recent claims indicates he has no plans of fighting Golovkin at full 160 pounds, insisting that the bout should only be at his catchweight of 155 pounds.

According to Boxrec, Alvarez has won his last four fights at a catchweight dwelling around the 155-pound mark, which validates his statement that he fights better at the junior middleweight class. Alvarez’s trainer Eddy Reynoso said that fighting the Mexican champ claiming to defend his title at the 155-pound mark is just “part of business.”

“We are quite comfortable at this weight and it suits us,” Reynoso told ESPN Deportes. “We are not inventing a new division; it’s just part of business and everyone looks for what suits them, and whoever wants to fight with Saul will have to come down or go up.”

Golovkin could fight in Texas in February or March next year. There is no confirmation yet if it will be against Alvarez, but the boxing world is about to find out as the 15-day period for Canelo’s team to negotiate a fight with Golovkin is almost up.
