Despite a stinging loss in his last fight, Lucas Matthysse of Argentina is still hoping to land a big fight, particularly against Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines.

Matthysse (37-4-0, 34 knockouts) lost via a 10th round knockout in his last fight, against Ukraine’s Viktor Postol (28-0-0, 12 knockouts), who nabbed the World Boxing Council (WBC) super lightweight title with the impressive victory.

Eric Gomez, the vice president of Golden Boy Promotions, which handles Matthysse’s fights, admitted that somewhere down the road they would want a Pacquiao vs Matthysse pairing but admitted that the Argentine’s recent performance does not warrant much confidence for such a bout.

“A fight between Matthysse and Pacquiao is a permanent goal for our company, but it is still premature to talk about something like that, after the loss Lucas had against Viktor Postol. When Matthysse and Postol fought, Bob Arum was very interested in watching the fight, with the desire that Lucas would have a good showing and from there we would have started talking about a showdown between the two fighters in the early months of 2016,” Gomez said to Boxing Scene.

“But the end result wasn't good for us and everything has cooled down for the moment. Nothing has been discarded [regarding those plans] and our desire is still to have Lucas get in the ring with Pacquiao in the future. But we're going to have to wait.”

There are also reports that Pacquiao's next fight—sometime in April of 2016—would be his last fight. Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 knockouts), currently an elected congressman in his country, is running for senator in the Philippine elections set in May.

Among the names that have cropped up as probable Pacquiao opponent in 2016 are Amir Khan (31-3-0, 19 knockouts) and Kell Brook (35-0-0, 24 knockouts) of the United Kingdom and Terence Crawford (27-0-0, 19 knockouts) of the United States. Others that might be considered are Americans Timothy Bradley (32-1-1, 12 knockouts) and Danny Garcia (31-0-0, 18 knockouts) and Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 knockouts), among others.

Khan appears to be the frontrunner in the race but talks have cooled down a bit with no recent development after initial reports that both sides are highly considering the Pacquiao vs Khan match-up. Freddie Roach, Pacquiao's trainer stated in an interview that they want a fifth fight against Marquez.

Pacquiao also said in multiple interviews that he is interested in a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr. but the undefeated American has not mentioned any plans of returning to the top of the squared ring. Mayweather beat Andre Berto in his last fight and announced his retirement from boxing after the win.

Before the loss to Postol, Matthysse was considered one of the top contenders in the super lightweight division. The Argentine’s most impressive win came in April of 2015 when he beat Ruslan Provodnikov of Russia via a 12-round majority decision victory.
