Boxing News 2014: Jessie Vargas Believes Manny Pacquiao Is Past His Peak, Wants Shot At Filipino Champion
Jessie Vargas knows that’s the fight in high demand is the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao pairing. However, given the circumstances surrounding the negotiations of that super fight, Vargas believes that there’s a high possibility that the Mayweather-Pacquiao bout won’t happen at all. If that big fight doesn’t push through, Vargas said he wants to grab the opportunity to fight the Filipino himself.
Apparently, according to Vargas, Bob Arum, founder and president of Top Rank Promotions which has the rights to the fights of both Vargas and Pacquiao, has promised him of the possibility that he’ll get a crack at Pacquiao if he beats Antonio DeMarco in Macau. Vargas did beat DeMarco via a 12-round unanimous decision with all three judges scoring it at 116-112 and the 25-year-old Mexican retained his World Boxing Association (WBA) World light welterweight title.
“He’s [Pacquiao] had his moments and now it's my time. He came in when Marco Antonio Barrera and Morales were on their way out. Well now I'm on my way up and he's on his way out,” Vargas confidently declared via fighthype.com. “I'm the young lion that's ready to open doors and if they don't want me to open 'em, I'll break 'em down. Whether they open 'em or I have to break 'em down, I will get through.”
In the same interview, Vargas stated that fans want action-packed fights and he can provide exactly that if paired with Pacquiao, who is popular for his aggression and willingness to exchange punches on top of the ring.
“People need to know that if you see a fight with Jessie Vargas and Manny Pacquiao, I promise you a war and a great fight and no one will be disappointed. I think that's what fans want to see and if that's what they want to see, accept this fight and let's make it happen. I have a lot of respect for the fans and I want them to have that desire to want to see this fight and I will give them a great fight” Vargas said.
Pacquiao vs. Vargas is indeed a possibility considering that the Filipino’s camp has mentioned that they could go down to the super lightweight/junior welterweight or 140-pounds division, where Vargas is campaigning. However, if Mayweather Jr. finally accepts the proposed super fight against Pacquiao, Vargas will have to wait and look for other options. And even if Mayweather Jr. runs away again, Pacquiao and company might have to consider Danny Garcia first before a fight with Vargas.
