Numerous studies have pointed to health benefits of blueberries, from getting rid of dental plaques to how to have glowing skin. The different health benefits that this fruit, native to North America, offers is because it has a strong influence on a wide range of human biomarkers linked to chronic ailments.

Fix.com, a health blog, reports that the positive effect of blue berries includes the brain, the gut and heart, and even prevention of cancer and diabetes, citing a recent University of Maine study. That’s because of the blueberries’ anti-carcinogenic properties and ability to lower blood glucose levels.

Because of the discovery by researchers at Laval University in Quebec, Canada, they are developing an oral device that could slowly release the blueberry extract that helps prevent dental plaque formation and treat severe gum disease. If successful, it would lead to reduced use of antibiotics for treatment of periodontitis, a serious gum disease.

Blueberries does not need to be eaten only as a fresh fruit. It is also made into jams and a healthy smoothie mixed with another healthy fruit. For the vegans, blueberries are one of the ingredients to make a vegetable dish, while it could also be made a main dish with salmon.
