BlackBerry unboxed on Wednesday the Z30 smartphone, hoping the device would boost the finances of the ailing Canadian company, which is set to lay off 40 per cent of its employees by yearend.

The Z30 features a large 5-inch super AMOLED touchscreen display, 1.7GHz processor with quad-core graphics and 2880 milliampere hour battery and runs on the BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.2.

The Z30 has a new feature that gives priority to messages considered by the phone owner as important. Tapping antennae technology and using stereo speakers, the device tunes reception for better connection in areas with low signal.

The Z30 will be available in mid-October, subject to carrier approval.

The roll out of the device, however, comes just barely a week after Apple unveiled its iPhone 5S and 5C, and Android devices continue to dominate the smartphone market.

The Z30 is the fourth of BlackBerry 10 devices after the Canadian tech firm released the Z10, Q10 and Q5. It has the Documents To Go suite pre-installed.
