More countries are moving toward recognising same-sex marriage, with New Zealand recently officiating its first gay union. It is not therefore surprising for Unilever New Zealand to reject a Flora margarine advert in South Africa deemed homophobic.

The ad hinted that discovering a son to be gay is stressful on the heart of parents. That message was delivered by using an image of a bullet headed to smash a porcelain heart, accompanied by the words "Uhh dad I'm gay" and "You need a strong heart today."

Flora is a margarine brand for Unilever being marketed as a healthy spread supposed to be good for the heart.

Gay rights groups criticised the ad on social media. Unilever said the ad is no longer running in South Africa and will never run in New Zealand.

Such an attitude toward gay sons is being displayed by a TV character in a popular soap opera in the Philippines named My Husband's Lover.

General Armando Soriano, played by actor Roi Vinzons, is the former chief of the Philippine Army who has Vincent, essayed by Tom Rodriguez, as his homosexual son. He only discovered Vincent's true gender preference last week and could not accept his sole child being gay, even if the latter is married to a woman and with two children.

Believing in the military mindset that tough training makes a weakling a real man, the general had his own son abducted and forced to go through an advanced military regime as an advanced reservist training.

The abduction and forced military training of Vincent is just one of the new twists to the bekiserye, cutting short the resumption of Vincent's gay relationship with Eric, played by Dennis Trillo.

In Thursday's episode, Vincent attempted to escape from the training, but failed. For those who failed to watch that episode, here is the YouTube posting of that episode.
