In a bid to further modernise the operations of its post office, Australia Post announced on Monday the launch of the online digital mailbox.

With the new service, Aussies could receive some of their letters online instead of it being delivered by the mailman. The online letterbox, which is available 24 hours a day, will connect Australians with service providers such as banks, utilities and government entities.

Unlike a regular email account, the digital mailbox allows Aussies to view their mails with service providers on one page and pay their bills online with just one click.

Australia Post also assured customers that the digital mailbox is secure because of its end-to-end encryption of all communications.

A few months ago, Australia Post broke grounds in global mailing system by riding on the online shopping trend instead of battling online technology which has caused the drastic dip in mailed letters and threatened financial viability of post offices around the world.

The agency took advantage of the online shopping trend and opened superstores where Australians could access 24 hours daily to pick up at their convenience parcels they ordered online.

On Monday, Australia Post announced that it opened 30 superstores accounts the country in response to the growing demand for the new service.

"With our parcel volumes growing a staggering 13 per cent since July last year due to online shopping, our superstores are where people's physical lives will connect with their digital lives," Australia Post Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Fahour said.

The 30 superstores are spread in 10 sites, but the agency will expand the service across Australia, Mr Fahour said.

The digital mailbox will be available in an app form for mobile and laptop devices.

The agency's roll out comes a week after Computershare, Salmat and Zumbox Software joined forces to create Digital Post Australia which provides their customers free, secure digital mailbox.

"We are taking one of the oldest forms of communication and making it more relevant to today's marketplace. The Australian consumer is ready for the next generation of mail delivery and the benefits it will bring will be significant and widespread for both consumers and business," ZD Net quoted Digital Post Australia Chairman David Hynes.

Australia Post will continue to offer its regular mail delivery service.
