Australian Housing Minister Jenny Macklin announced on Sunday the launch of a $30 million program that would provide interest-free loan to residents for them to buy more energy efficient home appliances.

The loans under the Home Energy Savers Scheme would range between $900 and $1,000. The program, which begins in 2012, seeks to cut the carbon footprint of Australia's households.

Macklin said the federal government could also send experts to residences to assess how they could make their homes more energy efficient. She said up to 50,000 homes are expected to benefit from the interest-free loan.
