Australian wildcard Ash Barty is back on the tennis court after battling depression during her professional years. Preparing to face world No. 1 Angelique Kerber at the Brisbane International, Barty shares her “falling out” experience from the game and how she found the inspiration to return to the circle.

The 20-year-old Ipswich tennis player is confident in facing Kerber in the tournament. An interview with Barty featured on The Australian revealed it’s an opportunity for someone like her to face the number 1 seed in tennis. Barty also said it’s a great way to start the summer, testing whether she still has it against Kerber. “Last Australian Open, I was fortunate to play Serena (Williams) when she was No 1. It’s exciting now to get a crack at Angie,” she added.

During her absence, Barty ventured on cricket and has even landed a contract with the Brisbane Heat. But tennis is in her blood and the call of her profession can’t be ignored. According to The Australian, it was her doubles partner Casey Dellacqua who encouraged her to return to the court.

In the absence of her former coach Jason Stoltenberg, Craig Tyzzy will take over and coach Ash Barty for the Brisbane International. Currently ranked No. 272, Barty is confident her team up with Tyzzy will give her enough confidence to play big on the court. “He’s such a calming influence and just perfect for me. He’s very similar to Stolts, as well as Jim, my original coach,” she added.

Angelique Kerber, on the other hand, expressed her sympathy over Barty’s past, saying the pressure is tough in the sports. She added that it’s not easy fending off the feeling of depression but there’s always a way to overcome it. It’s about dealing with the pressure that will help overcome the unwanted feeling and be able to find interest in the game once again.

The Brisbane International is on its fourth day since it kicked off on Jan. 1 and will wrap things on Jan. 8.
